Jira allows each space to define a default assignee for newly created work items. This setting has only two possible values: Space Owner or Unassigned. While this may seem restrictive, it is intentionally designed this way.
The default assignee exists to ensure that every new ticket has a predictable starting state. When set to Unassigned, new work items wait in the backlog for triage and prioritization. When set to Space Owner, all new work flows immediately to the person responsible for routing and managing requests.
Jira does not allow default assignment rules based on issue type, priority, reporter, or components. Atlassian designed assignment logic to live in workflows and automation, not in a single global default that could easily overload one person or misroute work.
Advanced assignment can be handled using Jira Automation rules, workflow post-functions, components with leads, and team assignment fields. These tools allow work to be routed dynamically and fairly based on real business logic.
The default assignee is a simple safety net. Automation is where real assignment happens.
